The Southern Maine Fish and Game Club
Established in 1927
About Us
Much about the Southern Maine Fish and Game will forever be lost in history. After much research, pawing through records at both the Fogg Library as the Rice Library for information of the club, the best we can establish is from speculation, assumption and some recollection of one of our esteemed member Harold and bits and pieces in the archives that were searched.
The origin of the organization was established prior to the 1927 date when residents like Bill Spinney, Henry Joyce, William Goodwin, Frank Johnson, Daniel Littlefield, and a Dr. J. Fogg as well as others would get together and discuss the up coming hunting season, the changes at the State House on the hunting and fishing laws as well as share their common interests in the sport. They met at their various homes usually after one of them had a successful day in the field or bay. They shared not only stories of the hunt in many cases it wasn't uncommon for a roast or even some part of the catch of the day to be shared. The Grange Halls in Kittery or Eliot, were a common meeting spot where Dr. Fogg with the hands of a skilled surgeon would help in the preparing of the bounty. Henry Joyce a fisherman and descendant of the Mic Mac Indians was always there to lend a helping hand or some preparation and food preservation advice. Some of that days bounty was distributed to the less fortunate residents and much of it was donated to the different Congregations that met on Sundays.
